ARRL Field Day June 28-29, 2025

Posted on June 5, 2025June 5, 2025

The SPARC Field Day effort is in the final planning stages. We need folks to volunteer and to operate. This year’s Field Day will be at the Drayton Fire House, (Google Maps Location) and should be a fun time for all. Field Day has been an annual event since 1933, and remains the most popular event in ham radio, with more than 31,000 hams in North America expected to participate this year. Frequently Asked Questions

How can I help? We will need volunteers for set-up and tear-down of equipment for the field day activities. We will be setting up equipment on site at 9am on Friday, June 27, 2025. Helping with set-up is a great opportunity to learn more about setting up an amateur radio station, including how to deploy an antenna, and what considerations are important in getting the best performance from your equipment.

Do I need a license to participate? Generally, a license is required to operate on amateur radio. Unlicensed guests may talk on the radio on our “get on the air” station under the direct supervision of one of our appropriately licensed club members (as control operator) and using our club call sign. This is a great opportunity to get your first experience with radio. Warning: It’s an addictive hobby. There’s a good chance you’ll want to get your license if you operate as a guest on field day.

Where do I get my Field Day pin, hat, etc.? The club will not be providing field day pins, hats, or other gear. You can, however, buy your own at the ARRL Field Day store.

Is the event family-friendly? Yes. Parents are encouraged to bring their school-aged children out to the event to learn more about radio. Many of the long-time hams in our club got their start as kids, and radio is a good hobby for technically-minded kids who are into science, math, and computers.

Can I bring my pet? Service animals are permitted, but please leave your pets at home. We are grateful to the folks at the firehouse for the use of the space, and wish to be respectful of their generosity by keeping the place clean. Pets, especially dogs, don’t always have the same understanding of “human rules.”

Where do I park? This is still an active fire house, so make sure to park in the back out of the way of the entrances and exits. Make sure you’re not going to be in the way in case of an active fire call.
